Interesting that not quite 1/4 of all Americans believe that states have a right to secede from the union. Up 10% since obama took power. That tells you something right there!
(CNS) — Nearly one-quarter of Americans believe that states have the right to secede, according to a recent poll from Rasmussen Reports — up 10 percentage points in two years.
The latest poll is just one of many that shows that Americans have “serious and growing concern about the federal government,” according to Scott Rasmussen, founder and president of Rasmussen Reports.
According to the phone survey released Sunday, 24 percent of Americans believe that states should be able to withdraw from the United States to form their own country, if they want. Nearly 60 percent (59) of Americans say they don’t believe states have the right to secede, while 16 percent are undecided.
“We do see that people are concerned about the federal government in a variety of ways,” Rasmussen told CNSNews.com. “51 percent believe that it’s a threat to individual liberties.
Yee-haw! Texas studies 85-mph speed limit, fastest in US…
Utah is only other state currently having an 80-mph limit…
A stretch of highway under construction in Texas could be the first U.S. road to have a posted speed limit of 85 miles per hour, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Texas State Highway 130 will run between San Antonio and Austin with the aim of taking traffic loads off of Interstate 35. The major north-south highway was named the fourth most congested road in the state by the Texas Department of Transportation last year.
Most of Highway 130 is built — and speed limits are posted at 80 mph — with the remaining section set to open before the end of this year.
“We’ll definitely take a look at that stretch, and we will conduct speed studies to see what that speed limit will be,” Darren McDaniel, the Texas Department of Transportation’s speed management director, said at a conference this week.
The Texas Legislature passed a law last year that allowed speed limits of up to 85 mph on newly constructed highways that were determined to be safe enough to allow such speeds.
Texas and Utah are currently the only states with speed limits of 80 mph.
“You never see this at a tea bag, man. What you have is a bunch of haters, people that tell lies, people that want to go back to the ’50s. White man rule. White man only. Here in the state of Wisconsin we have people that lie. They want money and they care only about themselves. You know the statistic came out that the minority population would soon be exceeding the white population and all of the sudden we start having fear. And they started, ‘Let’s get guns!’”
Sure way to put more people out of work!
The House Democrats pushing for a steep hike in the minimum wage could face an unlikely foe: their own leadership.
Behind Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (Ill.), almost two dozen liberal Democrats endorsed legislation this week to raise the federal minimum wage immediately from $7.25 to $10 per hour, the first such increase in three years.
The lawmakers think they’ve found a winning issue in an election cycle that’s featured the rise of the Occupy movement, criticism of Mitt Romney’s path to wealth and a class-centered fight over the Bush-era tax rates.
But no Democratic leaders have endorsed the measure, and the silence coming from their offices this week has highlighted the potential political difficulty in raising the minimum wage — a move that’s anathema to the powerful business lobby — amid sluggish economic times.
Concerns about the economy have increased since last Friday, when a jobs report showed an anemic May during which only 69,000 jobs were added. A higher minimum wage could discourage employers from creating more jobs and that, in turn, could hurt President Obama in the election.
Jackson said Thursday that he’s been in discussion with some Democratic leaders — including Reps. George Miller (Calif.), head of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, and John Larson (Conn.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus — “many of whom are crafting and thinking about the idea of a minimum wage strategy.”
