The seventh generation of the American icon has finally arrived.

GM has revealed its highly anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Corvette at the 2013 North American International AutoShow (NAIAS) in Detroit to much fanfare.

The seventh-generation 2014 Corvette Stingray, the C7, has been redesigned from the ground up and features bold new styling. GM says the new Corvette shares only two parts with its predecessor.

GM says the new carbon-fibre-happy Corvette will be powered by a 6.2-litre direct-injection V8 that will output an estimated 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. GM claims a zero-to-60 time of less than four seconds. All this, GM says, while being the most fuel-efficient Corvette ever.

Brazilian Bikini Waxes Make Crab Lice Endangered Species

Pubic lice, the crab-shaped insects that have dwelled in human groins since the beginning of history, are disappearing. Doctors say bikini waxing may be the reason.

Waning infestations of the bloodsuckers have been linked by doctors to pubic depilation, especially a technique popularized in the 1990s by a Manhattan salon run by seven Brazilian sisters. More than 80 percent of college students in the U.S. remove all or some of their pubic hair — part of a trend that’s increasing in western countries. In Australia, Sydney’s main sexual health clinic hasn’t seen a woman with pubic lice since 2008 and male cases have fallen 80 percent from about 100 a decade ago.

Head Start Doesn’t Work

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) just released its latest batch of Head Start data, revealing, once again, that its students are receiving far less than a “head start.”

The study, which was finally released the weekend before Christmas after more than a year’s delay, examines the third-grade outcomes of two groups of Head Start students: those who began the program at age three and another who began at age four.

In 2010, HHS released a similar report looking at first-grade outcomes. Both studies show similar results: Not only does Head Start have no impact on children’s academic outcomes, but it also has little to no impact on other measures of child well-being and, in some cases, even has some negative impacts.

In a newly released paper, Heritage’s Lindsey Burke and David Muhlhausen discuss the findings, summarized as follows:

Cognitive development. Of 11 measures of cognitive ability—including reading, language, and math ability—access to Head Start made no difference for either three- or four-year-old students on any outcomes.
Social-emotional development. Of 19 measures of social-emotional development—such as aggression, hyperactive behavior, and conduct problems—for the three-year-old cohort, access to Head Start was connected to a slight benefit in “social skills and positive approaches to learning,” as reported by parents, but it had no impact on any of the other outcomes. For four-year-olds, Head Start was associated with a small decrease in aggressive behavior but also appeared to be significantly linked to harmful impacts, including higher teacher reports of “an unfavorable impact on the incidence of children’s emotional symptoms,” as well as poorer peer relations.
Child health outcomes. Of five measures of health outcomes, Head Start made no difference for either group, including no impact on “receipt of dental care, health insurance coverage, and overall child health status being excellent or good.”
Parenting outcomes. Of the 10 measures of parental outcomes, Head Start appeared to have only one benefit for each group. Parents of the three-year-old cohort reported higher levels of authoritative parenting, and parents of the four-year-old cohort reported spending more time with their children.

America Loses Another War!

Cut it anyway you want, parse it anyway you choose, and the plain truth remains — America has lost the war in Afghanistan. This loss comes right on the heels of the lost war in Iraq.

Here’s the President’s mealy mouthed “apology ” for cutting and running in Afghanistan: “So, you know, I think that, have we achieved everything that some might have imagined us achieving in the best of scenarios? Probably not. You know, there’s a human enterprise, and you know, you fall short of the ideal,”

Well, now. I suppose it just makes everything all right for those veterans permanently injured from that war, right?

Look. The war in Afghanistan was mismanaged almost from the beginning. I say “almost” because the public intent of the invasion of Afghanistan was to destroy the Taliban and a disrupt AL-Qaeda (in Afghanistan) so they could no longer train and mount attacks on the US from Afghan soil. Personally, I was OK with that. I felt it needed to be done.

BUT. Then it became something else entirely. It became a mission in “Nation Building” at which the US absolutely sucks!

As you may have gathered, if you regularly follow this scribe’s ranting, I hate the idea of nation building — especially when it is done by the US military whose mission should ALWAYS be to kill people and break things. And when they are NOT killing people and breaking things they ought to be training to kill people and break things so as to maintain their edge, to be sharp and leaning forward, ready to bring America’s hammer down on any enemy, or would be enemy, at a moment’s notice.

Doctors euthanize deaf Belgian identical twins who could not bear to go blind
Identical twins have been killed by Belgian doctors in a unique case under the country’s euthanasia laws.

The 45-year-old brothers from the Antwerp region were born deaf and sought euthanasia after finding out that they would soon go blind. They told doctors that they were unable to bear the thought of not being able to see each other again.

The twins had spent their entire lives together, sharing a flat and working as cobblers.
