NSA chief: Internet ‘at great risk,’ needs defense system

General Keith Alexander, head of the National Security Agency, addressed an audience at the Defcon hacking conference in Las Vegas Friday, saying the Internet needed fundamental defenses against foreign incursion.

It’s the first time an NSA official has spoken at the world-famous conference, where the attendees are often engaged in unquestionably illegal activities like attempting to breach the security of government agencies. But General Alexander seemed to regard them as kindred spirits as well as experts.

“Sometimes you guys get a bad rap. From my perspective, what you’re doing to figure out vulnerabilities in systems is great,” he told the crowd, according to a report from CNET.

Chik-fil-A, Gay Marriage, and the Role of Government

Since I’ve already written that polygamy – regardless of how weird it is – is not something that demands government intervention, you won’t be surprised that I also think that gay marriage is a non-issue.

I don’t care if two guys want to get together. I don’t care if some religion (or some other group) wants to sanction their union, and I don’t care if they want to call it marriage, or make up some new word.

But I also don’t care if some churches don’t want to sanction same-sex unions. And I don’t care if some religious people don’t want to give approval to such relationships.

The good thing about freedom is that there is room for diversity. We all don’t have to be the same and think the same.

Unless, of course, government is involved. Then private differences become policy disputes.

This is why I urged non-intervention in this CNN discussion about whether local governments should discriminate against a restaurant chain merely because the top executive has religious beliefs that irk some politicians.

Will Obamacare Raise The Cost of Big Macs ?

Smart Money asked that question:

Complying with the Affordable Care Act will cost as much as $420 million annually, McDonald’s CFO Peter Bensen said during a conference call Monday, according to CFO Journal. And when the new law goes fully into effect in 2014, it’s possible menu prices will be raised to cover the health costs.

But experts say the price hikes could extend beyond chicken McNuggets. Some analysts believe companies may use health care as an excuse to raise prices, even if the added costs don’t warrant the increase. Peter Saleh, a restaurant analyst at Telsey Advisory Group, expects sit-down diners at restaurants like The Olive Garden, owned by Darden Restaurants (DRI), and The Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), which own a greater proportion of their locations than some fast food chains, to eventually pay at least 2% more to eat there. But Saleh says it’s too soon to know how the companies will cope with the new mandates: “A lot of them at this point aren’t willing to give us estimates about it.”

(NBC Chicago) — After a national conversation blew up this week over the role of legislature and small business, Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to set the record straight on how he feels about Chick-fil-A.

Emanuel press secretary Tarrah Cooper called Friday to clarify the mayor’s stance on whether a Logan Square Chick-fil-A location would be vetoed because of the company’s views on gay marriage.

“He never said he’d block the restaurant from coming,” Cooper said.

Earlier in the week, the mayor seemed to back a plan from Ald. Joe “Proco” Moreno (1st) to prevent Chick-fil-A from opening a second Chicago store after chain President Dan Cathy recently vocalized his stance against gay marriage.

Moreno said Wednesday he wouldn’t approve a company that discriminates against a segment of the community. “I think it’s irresponsible to have discriminatory policies from the top down,” Moreno told NBC Chicago. “They’re not coming in.”

Emanuel agreed with at least the former part of that statement during a one-on-one interview Thursday with NBC Chicago. “The values expressed are not Chicago values.”

“Gay couples are our neighbors, our families, members of our own families, they’re our residents- those are our values,” Emanuel said. “And we don’t want to have any policy that discriminates against people that are essential members and members who contribute to the value of our city. That’s who we are.”

To clarify, Cooper said Emanuel still believes “their values are not Chicago values.” But that doesn’t mean he would block them.

“If they meet all the requirements, they’re welcome to open a restaurant here.”

Obama stiffing taxpayers for the bills once again, and again, and again…

WMUR

A New Hampshire town says  a campaign visit last month by President Barack Obama cost about $13,000, well  below the initial estimate of up to $30,000.

Selig says several organizations, including WMUR-TV and The Associated Press,  had filed right-to-know requests to learn the identity of a donor who agreed to  pay up to $20,000 to cover expenses from the visit. He says the town will  provide that information when the funds are received.

The Obama campaign  decided it wouldn’t reimburse the town for the costs.

Is Pam Biondi On The Top of Mitt’s VP List ?

From Business Insider

But this afternoon, the campaign added a surprise name to the  list: Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

According to a campaign release, Bondi will  travel miles away from her home state on Saturday to stump for Romney at three  stops in New Hampshire, including a Women for Mitt Kickoff Breakfast in Concord,  and campaign office openings in Bedford and Stratham.

Incidentally, the events will put Bondi in close proximity to both  the Romney campaign headquarters in Boston and the Romney  family’s vacation compound on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnepesaukee.
