Unexcited? There May Be a Pill for That

George Carlin on Rape

For all of the people out there expressing their moral outrage and joining in on a Daniel Tosh feeding frenzy I offer this classic George Carlin routine. In this routine Carlin starts off discussing 1st amendment rights, moves on to people telling comedians what they can and can’t joke about, and runs into the subject of rape. He very clearly says in this routine that rape is hilarious…much like Tosh did…but as he unravels the routine he gets into the bullshit excuses that men use to justify rape…takes the female side on the issue of women’s clothing not being an excuse for rape…makes fun of rapists and their apparent lack of standards…and makes a very important point about being able to joke about anything as long as the joke is constructed well enough. By the end of the routine you see that he is not pro-rape, and not some simple sexist pig who is just in it to harass women. You get to see all this because he was allowed to finish the damn joke…Tosh wasn’t. Daniel Tosh’s joke might have turned out to be just as iconic as this routine (one of the most famous jokes Carlin ever made) but we will never know because he was cut off. What people are judging isn’t his “Rape Joke”…it’s the way he handled the heckler who busted up his routine. I am not going to defend his response to this heckler but I will say as a comedian that we have all been in situations where we had to respond to a heckler and it got very ugly. There is no script for off the cuff responses and they sometimes go horribly wrong.

Having said that I will now say this…anyone who has ever seen me perform knows that I don’t do rape jokes. This is not because people say it’s wrong or tell me I can’t…it’s because I choose not to. I find the subject distasteful. It’s one of the few restrictions I have on what I say….however…I don’t need to like the content of Tosh’s joke (of course I will never know since he never got to make the joke) in order to defend the right to make it. If you go to a comedy show you should expect to hear off color comments made about controversial subjects…either wear your big boy pants and pack your sense of humor…or don’t go.

The lessons to learn here are probably:

1) People who are easily offended shouldn’t go to comedy shows.

2) Comedians talk about social issues as a form of satire.

3) The first amendment protects a comedians right to make a joke no matter how much you dislike it…the first amendment does not just apply to people who say things that you like.

4) Stick to the facts…we were not judging his rape joke because it was never made…we were judging his reaction to a heckler

5) Yes this woman was a heckler. A heckler is by definition someone who stands up and starts yelling to interrupt your routine…which is what she did. It doesn’t matter whether Tosh was talking about rape or my little pony…it is still heckling.

6) If you think you can stand on a stage in front of a few hundred people and deal with a heckler without ever having an off night and pissing someone off…you are probably seriously deluded (but prove me wrong…I dare you.)

7) If you call out a comedian on stage you are calling down the lightning bolts from Zeus…and everybody knows that. We generally do not let it pass as a rule. That is letting the audience control the cadence of your show, and that can ruin your delivery completely. If you let one person get away with it…it will only be a minute or two before another one tries it.

I would like to point one last thing out…Tosh’s onstage persona is very much a douchebag. His mannerisms, his inflection, even his facial expressions are all used to cultivate this persona. He is the kind of guy that you see and instantly want to punch in the face just for looking as smarmy as he does…before he even speaks. I have no idea if he is like that in real life but that is his onstage schtick. His fans eat that shit up and ask for seconds. I don’t know why any of this surprises anyone. How anyone could go to one of his shows and not expect this is what surprises me.

Earlier this afternoon I took my wife up to Des Moines. Met up with our cousin. Then I came home alone! Yes, will be here all by myself (surprising really just how quiet it is without her here) until either Saturday evening or sometime Sunday. Depends on the wife really, as she and our cousin will be coming back from the other end of Iowa (Coralville area) sometime Saturday after the big women get together. Cousin is babysitting her granddaughter, so she is glad to have my wife along with her to keep her company. So wife will either want me to pick her up when they get to her (cousin) house or wait until Sunday to go pick her up.

Obama Explains His Unpopularity by Scapegoating Stupid Voters

The same stupid voters who elected him are, unfortunately, too stupid to understand how completely excellent his policies have been:
“When I think about what we’ve done well and what we haven’t done well,” the president said, “the mistake of my first term — couple of years –  was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that’s important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times.”
Obama: I Regret Not Speaking Slower And Using
Smaller Words. If I Had, You’d Realize How Lucky
You Are I Let You Have Me As Your President
This is, of course, the political equivalent of telling a recruiter during a job interview that your big “weakness” is that you “try too hard.” It’s an almost completely meaningless self-criticism: The point, as is always the case in “messaging” complaints, is to compliment yourself on the correctness of your policy choices while blaming their failure on some facile communication problems.
What Obama appears to be attempting to explain — which is why he corrected “my first term” and emphasized he meant the first “couple of years” — is the world-historic ass-kicking the Democrats took in the 2010 midterms. The fact that do-nothing Harry Reid was able to maintain his gig as Senate Majority Leader somewhat obscured the significance of the incredible electoral catastrophe suffered by House Democrats.

Rachel Maddow Shows Her “Butch” Side and Picks A Fight With The Koch Brothers!

So the Koch brothers got under your skin? Picked on a producer you say?

“But we got nothing wrong here… we were 100% factually [accurate]”

Yeah, Yeah, what else is new? I have to tell you, I’m a wee bit dubious. NBC doesn’t exactly have the best record when it comes to being factually accurate, at least not in recent memory.

And, quite frankly, your show hasn’t been that friendly to the Koch brothers, now has it?

Certainly this was not the first shot, if you know what I mean.

“But we reported nothing other than what they did…this is just a shot at me…they can feel free to man up any time…their beef is with me!”

Well now, you don’t mince words! And, with that, a question that’s been annoying me for years has finally been answered – Rachel wears the pants!

I am getting to enjoy watching any show that has John Sununu on. He really pounds out those who mispeak or flat out lie!

SUNUNU MAKES A FOOL OF JUAN WILLIAMS!

via Mediaite:

Former New Hampshire governor John Sununu squared off with Juan Williams on Sean Hannity‘s show tonight over the political fallout from a report today showing Mitt Romney was listed as an executive of Bain up to three years after he claimed he retired from the company. Sununu flipped the charges of criminal behavior onto the Obama administration, and when Williams tried to defend the president, Sununu told him his “blind loyalty” to Obama makes him “look foolish.”

Hannity opened by bringing up Sununu’s recent appearance on MSNBC where he laughed out loud at Andrea Mitchell for, as Hannity phrased it, regurgitating Obama talking points on the outsourcing debate. Sununu joked that “her tongue got in front of her eye teeth” so she couldn’t process what she was saying.

The conversation quickly turned to an assertion made by an Obama campaign staffer that Mitt Romney either lied about retiring in 1999 from Bain Capital or lied on legal documentation, implying Romney could have committed a felony. Sununu personally found it amazing the Obama campaign was the one to “bring felony into the discourse” given the president’s ties to “Chicago politics” and felons who he used to be political allies with. Williams bashed Sununu’s assertions as “character assassination,” and insisted the facts of the Romney story were sound.

Sununu told Williams, “Don’t let your blind loyalty for this president make you sound foolish.” He argued that from 1999 to 2002, Romney’s number one priority was preparing for the Winter Olympics and said there is “no reality” in claims that Romney was also keeping his managerial role at Bain Capital. When Williams went after Romney on the issue of offshore accounts, Sununu brushed it aside and claimed over 90 percent of Democrats in Congress have them too, and so they’re hypocrites for bashing Romney for it.

Hannity backed up Sununu’s point by citing several Democrats who have offshore accounts, but Williams rebutted this point by saying “they’re not running for president!” When Sununu continued to criticize Obama’s policies, Williams phrased his critique of the Republican candidate as a potential benefit for his campaign.

“What’s going on with Mitt Romney? He’s allowing President Obama to define him as a guy who’s secretive, who’s not coming forward, who has apparently deceived the Securities and Exchange Commission about when he was running Bain. This is not helping Mitt Romney! His campaign should take control of these issues, governor!”

Sununu pledged to remind Williams about what he said “until his dying days” because of how big a lie he said it was.

Logos surround us in digital and physical space, but we rarely examine the thought and artistic thinking that goes into the design of these symbols. Utilizing a silent vocabulary of colors, shapes, and typography, logo designers give a visual identity to companies and organizations of all types. From cave painters to modern designers, artists throughout history have been reducing the complex down to simple ideas that communicate with the world.
