It’s worse than Romney said: 49% on federal aid, 49% pay no tax

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney underplayed the percentage of Americans receiving some federal aid in that new clandestine fundraising video that is giving liberals, the media and President Obama’s team fits.

While Romney suggested that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government aid of some sort, the number is actually slightly higher. Over 49 percent of Americans live in a household where somebody is dependent on federal assistance, according to federal statistics.

And the percentage of people who don’t pay taxes is worse than Romney pegged at 47 percent. According to the Heritage Foundation, it’s over 49 percent. This is from a report they just issued: “In 1962, the first year measured in the Index of Dependence on Government, the percentage of people who did not pay federal income taxes themselves and who were not claimed as dependents by someone who did pay federal income taxes stood at 23.7 percent; it fell to 12 percent by 1969 before beginning a ragged and ultimately steady increase. By 2000, the percentage was 34.1 percent; by 2009, it was 49.5 percent. In short, the country is now at a point where roughly one-half of ‘taxpayers’ do not pay federal income taxes, and where most of that same population receives generous federal benefits.”

U.S. Census figures cited by multiple sources including the Wall Street Journal, CNN and Heritage, find that American reliance on federal assistance has surged under Obama. When he took office, it was 44.4 percent. And it’s a trend: some 30 percent relied on assistance in the 1980s.

Some of that, of course, individual Americans paid for, such as Social Security and Medicare. According to the sources, the breakdown goes like this:

– 15 percent of American households are on food stamps.

– 15 percent tap Medicare.

– 26 percent use Medicaid.

– 2 percent are on unemployment.

– 16 percent receive Social Security.

Overall, under Obama federal aid to health, welfare, housing and retirement programs has spiked. But it’s dropped dramatically to education and rural and agricultural programs, said Heritage.

What Romney inartfully said has been echoed by small government advocates for years. But for critics of expanded federal aid that concern is reaching a crisis as they worry the government is spending itself into bankruptcy and American liberty and independence is evaporating.

Said Heritage’s federal spending experts William Beach and Patrick D. Tyrrell in their latest report on government dependence: “Perhaps the greatest danger is that the swelling ranks of Americans who enjoy government services and benefits for which they pay few or no taxes will lead to a spreading sense of entitlement that is simply incompatible with self-government.

Earlier this afternoon, I picked up a book to read another chapter or two, when wife comes into the room all excited. She tells me, the charger for her kindle fire is not working, have to go to wal mart and get a new one. NOW! You have to know that my wife, like all the other kindle fire owners in the family, can not exist without it working and in their hands. So off to wal mart I go. It is a 36 mile round trip since we live a bit from any wal marts. I was lucky when I got to wal mart and got a new charger for her kindle fire. And off home I go with it. Get home, I put the bag on the table and tell my wife, here it is. She looks at me and says, well hook it up NOW! So I do. And guess what?

The kindle fire is not charging! Told wife, think it is not the charger. So she hunts and hunts for the warranty (bought a 2 year one). Finds everything about the kindle fire but the warranty. She did find the toll free number to Amazon. And she calls. And after a bit of talking, I have to go to her amazon account so she can read off the credit card information. Well, it was not our credit card, but one of her sister’s cc information. So had to add our credit card to her account (it is on my amazon account and I could not use my account as her kindle fire is attached to her account). Did that and the person she was talking to said got it, checked and told her there would be a $1.00 verification charge to our credit card to verify it was good, and that in a few days, the charge would be reversed. No problem there for sure. And then the bottom line?

My wife gets a new kindle fire! Rep told her it would be sent out and she should get in in two days, three days max. She is to check the new one to make sure it works, then in the same box, to return the old one. Postage paid no less. Now that is service, that is taking care of your customers, that people is Amazon!

Told wife later, wonder if you will get the new Kindle Fire? Wait and see, wait and see. As I see Amazon is already advertising the new Kindle Fire on television. And yes, I do want one for myself!

What Obama Thinks of Americans

We know how Barack Obama feels about Mitt Romney. He holds him in contempt — and, speaking through his proxies, has all but called him a felon, tax cheat, and murderer.

Who cares?  Trash talk is Obama’s political lingua franca.  He relishes delivering these insults face-to-face while shielded by the respect his victims have for the office of the presidency — a reverence he does not share.
What should be important is how he feels about us: the American people.  And how should this impact the so-called likeability gap between him and Romney as election day approaches?

In 2008, Americans questioned Barack Obama’s feelings towards Americans.  His famous gaffe was the tipoff:

You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them[.]

So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Yawn — everyone knows about that broad-based insult.  And everyone certainly knew that Obama’s “moral compass,” Pastor Jeremiah Wright, Jr., had scathing views of America and toward Americans.  One was explained away as a “gaffe” and the other explained away by claims that Obama was never in the pews when a stream of anti-America invective poured forth from Wright — an excuse belied by Obama’s own words in a newspaper interview and by keen investigative work by Stanley Kurtz in his book Radical-in-Chief (pages 320-3).

But Obama’s condescension towards broad swaths of Americans was presaged years before, and it has deepened and widened over the years.  In 1990, he said that “suburbs bore me.”  By implication, suburbanites bore him but do have their uses — donations and votes, for example.

But Barack Obama has never been able to keep his feelings towards Americans hidden for long.  Americans don’t see the contempt too often, though, because Obama’s speechwriters are more circumspect than he is on the stump.

The truth comes out Washington-style: as “gaffes.”
There is a stream of insults that has flown forth over the past few years — and have been all but smothered by the media.  That is an anomaly, of course — because if there has ever been a “man bites dog” story that should compel media coverage, it would be a politician — let alone a president — who, instead of delivering paeans to the people, rebukes them repeatedly.
What have these insults been?  What do they reveal?  And, more importantly, why should we vote for a man who holds such a low opinion of Americans?  And why do Americans like a man who clearly does not like many of us?

The Dirty Laundry List

“I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”  Obama must have realized how this might be interpreted, so he added some nice-sounding verbiage, but the deed was done.  Bill Clinton had proclaimed in his second inaugural address that “America stands alone as the world’s indispensable nation” (italics mine).  Barack Obama does not agree — and moreover, he says we are not a model for the world and in fact have reasons to atone to it.  And Obama has assumed for us the role of atoner in chief.
Very early in his presidency (in 2009), Obama did apologize at least five times, and perhaps as many as ten times, within the first six months of his presidency.  We are not worthy of respect.

Furthermore, Americans don’t think clearly.  When the red tide of the 2010 midterms became visible, Obama refused to accept responsibility that Democratic policy was at fault.  On the contrary, the people were.

President Barack Obama said Americans’ “fear and frustration” is to blame for an intense midterm election cycle that threatens to derail the Democratic agenda.

“Part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now and facts and science and argument does not seem to be winning the day all the time is because we’re hardwired not to always think clearly when we’re scared,” Obama said Saturday evening in remarks at a small Democratic fundraiser Saturday evening. “And the country’s scared.”

This was echoed recently by Michelle Obama, who depicted undecided voters as “confused” and “knuckleheads.”

People who watch Fox News (the most widely watched cable news outlet — and one Obama has appeared on, opposite Bill O’Reilly, over the years) are a “little stubborn” and don’t understand Obama’s policies. For good measure, he told Republicans in 2009 (pre-Sandra Fluke) that  you “just can’t listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done” — as if Republicans just are mindless robots marching to Limbaugh’s tune.

Why should that matter, since Americans are poor listeners anyway?
President Obama recently said that the biggest mistake of his first term was not being a good enough story-teller, explaining that he needs to be better communicate to the American people as to why his policies mattered.  (His verbal tic “let me be clear” when he prefaces a point reflects the view that Americans need to pay better attention.)  Paul Ryan had some fun with this criticism during the Republican National Convention.

America’s Biggest Claw Game Plucks Oil Rigs from the Briny Deep

Though they weigh as much as 60,000 tons, the massive semi-submersible oil rigs dotting the Gulf of Mexico can still sink when faced with a hurricane’s onslaught. And there’s only one way to pull the rigs’ 7,500 ton decks off the seafloor after such a catastrophe—with America’s heaviest-lifting ship, the VB 10,000.

Designed by the Versabar corporation (based off the company’s previous heavy lifter, the Bottom Feeder) and constructed by Gulf Marine Fabricators in Ingleside, Texas, the $100-million VB 10,000 is a heavy-lift catamaran that mounts a pair of massive lift gantries atop a pair of barges. Perhaps massive is a bit of an understatement.

Each gantry measures 240-feet tall and weighs 3,400 tons—or about as much as the Ben Franklin Bridge in Pennsylvania. The barges both measure 300 feet by 72 feet and each is powered by a quartet of 1,000HP thrusters which also allow it to remain stationary over the job site. And to prevent the motion of the ocean from affecting the the lift, the VB 10,000 utilizes a set of articulated pins to connect the gantries to the barges. To perform the actual lift, four 2000-ton lifting blocks are attached to the oil rig deck by divers, who also cut off the rig’s legs, and are then pulled to the surface by the vessel’s quad 400-ton winches and deposited on the back of a waiting barge for transport back to port.

Launched in October of 2010, the VB 10,000 has already logged over 40 lifts—everything from underwater debris retrieval, to topside decommissioning, to jacket removal and reefing. And with the vessel’s new grasping devices, the VB 10,000 will be able to pick up the some 1,800 rigs US regulators have deemed necessary for removal in the next decade.

Aptly named “The Claws”, these underwater lift devices are exactly what they sound like, gigantor pincers like what you’d find in a carnival game or a Gizmodo Gallery. Each independently-operated claw measures 122-feet tall, 112-feet wide, and weighs 1,000 tons. They can also be used in conjunction with a set of cradles which are sunk to the seafloor ahead of a claw lift. The debris is first loaded into the cradle then the the cradle itself is raised. This prevents the claws accidentally crimping a a multi-million dollar rig deck as it’s recovered. [Versabar - Offshore Magazine - gCaptain - PopSci - Images: Versabar]

Romney’s ‘gaffe’ a plus for him

Russian warships and Turkish jets appeared at a godless, we-all-belong-to-government DNC with abolitionist dreams of annihilating Israel, and soon thereafter a tape slips out (reportedly courtesy of Jimmy Carter’s grandson James Earl Carter IV)) of a respectable private fundraiser featuring Romney on the rhetorical equivalent of spring break.

What “accidents” and “surprises”, and it’s only September!

Truth is to the MSM as sunlight is to vampires. Put that together with the MSM’s criminal corruption and obsessive compulsive, denial-fueled stupidity and you have a certifiable winner for Romney.

Romney’s talking about [gasp] the dependency of the 47%, and has the temerity to conjecture that he’s unlikely to receive their vote to boot!

That’s not how you win an election! Why, that rock-ribbed paid-to-act-like he’s a Republican David Brooks says so, and didn’t he write an extraordinary philosophical treatise on the political animal? Brooks, with characteristic cutting-edge wit, even brands Mitt “Thurston Howell Romney.”

Oops–there goes the Gilligan’s Island vote (especially the women, except for the Mrs.)!

But guess what, Mr. Brooks & company: in this presidential election “47″ is a losing number.

That might bear repeating: “47″ is a losing number.

The more often the president is associated with “47″ the better, and we’re guaranteed to hear an incessant torrent of Obama 47s (if they’re not for Romney, those must be the man known as Obama’s people!) from the plagiarists and assorted miscreants in the presstitute corps.

Plus, Romney unchained is red meat to, shall we say, remaining lackadaisical conservatives (many of whom are libertarians), and with Gary Johnson waiting in the wings, that’s all sunshine.

“Oh, but what about those independents, the 5-6% figure we keep hearing about?”

What about them?

Those whose delicate, chauvinist ears think the political truth is too callous to speak, and/or who think compassion has more to do with government than it does jobs were going to vote for the mush lord Communist and his slum lord # 2 (Jarrett, not the Dummy) anyway. Either that, or they were planning on staying home and likely still are.

Remaining independents are now far more motivated to vote for Romney than they were yesterday.

One final thing: the “mistakenly” released “Romney unchained” video may well also function as a response to the “mistaken” Russian warships and Turkish jets.

If so, there is reason to believe that Romney has communicated a well-grounded belief that the Communist is cooked in the Middle East.

Shame

From Andrew Klavan at PJ Media:

The people who booed the God of love, now rush to the defense of a hateful Allah. The people who pissed on the Christ of redemption, now bewail the hurt feelings of a damnable Islam. The people who denounced the death of civil liberties under the Patriot Act, now make rationalizations as brown-shirted cops drag a man from his home at midnight for the crime of posting a video on YouTube.

I’m sorrowful, but I confess I’m not surprised.

Over the course of time, I have seen many people ruin and waste their lives. Good people, smart people, talented people who sacrificed the gift of existence to drugs, alcohol, bitterness, self-abuse, fear, and anger. In every case, always, I felt the root cause was unacknowledged shame.

At some point, these people had come to confront — as we all must — their cowardice, their weakness, their dishonesty, or their foolishness. Unable to accept the pain of an honest assessment of their brokenness, they turned their eyes away and practiced denial instead. In an attempt to avoid the agony of their shame indefinitely, they created whole new philosophies of life. If, for instance, they had backed down when they should have stood up, they declared nothing was worth fighting for. If they lied when they should’ve spoken true, they declared truth was an illusion. If they succumbed to desire when they should have resisted, they decided continence was a game for puritans and fools.

In order to feel justified within this new philosophy, they not only had to continue in the bad behavior that shamed them in the first place, they had to condemn any good behavior that held the mirror up to their secret self-disgust. This always involved them in blatant self-contradiction. The person who believed there was no truth would accuse others of lying. The person who said all sexual behavior should be accepted would declare chastity unacceptable. The person who believed tolerance was the highest value would find those who disagreed intolerable.

Ultimately their stratagems of self-deception destroyed their integrity, and their hidden shame festered and ate away… well, everything; the whole joy of living.

When I see, in the United States of America, a man rousted from his home at midnight and dragged to a police station over a YouTube video, when I see brutal, primitive, violent Islamism on the march and the values of free men and women in retreat, when I see so-called journalists doing everything they can to suppress, deny, and explain away rather than spread the news, my first reaction isn’t outrage at our foolish failure of a president, nor is it hatred for the cancerous religion currently doing murder to people of every competing belief system everywhere around the world. My first reaction is genuine sadness over the many, many Democrats of good will who are going to betray every value they profess to hold dear and double down on their error this election day because they simply can’t bear to acknowledge the fact that they were wrong.

Over and over in my mind, I keep hearing the famous words of Oliver Cromwell: “I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible that you may be mistaken!”

The Toronto Blue Jays suspended Yunel Escobar for three games on Tuesday after he wore eye-black tape inscribed with a homophobic slur during Saturday’s game at the Rogers Centre. Escobar’s lost pay will be donated to Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and he will undergo sensitivity training.

“I don’t have anything against homosexuals. I have friends that are gay,” Escobar said at a news conference through a translator.

“The person who decorates my house is gay, the person who cuts my hair is gay”

Picture of Al Qaeda Assassination Plot Emerges: Terrorists released after Qaddafi’s overthrow allegedly responsible for deadly Libya embassy attack.

The Obama administration’s continuing efforts to maintain the narrative that murder of our ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and his three staff members was part of a “spontaneous” demonstration inspired by a “very offensive video” took another hit yesterday. The Debka File is reporting that the executions were part of a carefully orchestrated plan carried out by well-trained al-Qaeda operatives. The 20-man assassination team was given its orders by the terrorist organization’s leader, Ayman al Zawahiri. The assassins were all Libyans who had been serving sentences for terrorism under Muammar Qaddafi’s rule. They were freed when Qaddafi was overthrown.

The motive for the executions was revenge. On September 10th, Zawahiri released a 42-minute video confirming that his deputy, Abu Yahya al-Libi, was killed in a drone strike in Pakistan’s Waziristan tribal area on June 4, according to SITE and IntelCenter. Libi was a jihadst theologian who rose to prominence in 2005 after he escaped from U.S. custody in Afghanistan. Considered al-Qaeda’s best propagandist, his death reportedly dealt a major blow to the organization.

“With the martyrdom of Sheikh Abu Yahya, may Allah have mercy on him, people will flock even more to his writings and call, Allah willing,” Zawahiri said in Arabic, according to a SITE translation. In the video, titled “The Lion of Knowledge and Jihad: Martyrdom of al-Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi” the terror master also referenced President Obama, whom he characterized as a “liar” elected to “trick” Muslims, even as he is “being defeated in Afghanistan.” Zawahiri brought up Warren Weinstein as well. Weinstein is an elderly U.S. aid worker kidnapped by Al-Qaeda just over a year ago in Pakistan. Zawahiri vowed to hold Weinstein until the U.S. released al-Qaeda followers imprisoned in Afghanistan.

According to Debka, the release of that video was a “go” signal for the mission in Benghazi. To disguise the nature of that mission, the assassination team took advantage of the demonstrations allegedly incited by the video “Innocence of Muslims,” storming the consulate in conjunction with the protesters. The gunmen subsequently split into two groups of 10 men each, and carried out their attack in two separate stages.

The first stage involved one group firing rockets at the consulate under the assumption that ambassador Stevens’ armed guard detail would grab him, get him out of the building, and take him to a safe house where he would receive Secret Service protection. According to CBS News, that’s exactly what happened. A Libyan commander told them a convoy of 22 vehicles, two of them armored, fled the consulate, and headed down a road towards the safe house located a mile and a half away.

It was during that trip that al-Qaeda put the second phase of its plan into action. The second group of terrorists apparently knew which vehicles among the convoy contained the ambassador and his armed escort, and they set up an ambush to intercept them. As a result, Stevens and his three staff members were reportedly killed at point blank range. Debka further reports that the investigation by American counter-terror experts and other “clandestine services” is focusing on why no clues of the attack were picked up by any intelligence agency, as well as the failure of surveillance authorities to notice any preparations being made by the terrorist group.

Note to Paul Krugman: Here’s Real ‘Eliminationist’ Rhetoric

Have you noticed that the left regularly condemns alleged conservative “hate speech” but is almost completely silent on the most pervasive hate speech in the world?

Take New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, for example.

On Jan 8, 2011, in Tucson, Ariz., Jared Loughner murdered six people and gravely wounded Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. That very day (published the next day), based on nothing, Paul Krugman wrote that the murders were a result of hate-filled rhetoric that saturates conservative and Republican life.

“When you heard the terrible news from Arizona, were you completely surprised? Or were you, at some level, expecting something like this atrocity to happen?

“Put me in the latter category.

“It’s true that the shooter in Arizona appears to have been mentally troubled. But that doesn’t mean that his act can or should be treated as an isolated event …

“There isn’t any place for eliminationist rhetoric, for suggestions that those on the other side of a debate must be removed from that debate by whatever means necessary.

“And it’s the saturation of our political discourse — and especially our airwaves — with eliminationist rhetoric that lies behind the rising tide of violence.

“Where’s that toxic rhetoric coming from? Let’s not make a false pretense of balance: it’s coming, overwhelmingly, from the right …

“So will the Arizona massacre make our discourse less toxic? It’s really up to G.O.P. leaders. Will they accept the reality of what’s happening to America and take a stand against eliminationist rhetoric? Or will they try to dismiss the massacre as the mere act of a deranged individual and go on as before?”

Most of the American left echoed Krugman’s libel.

So, then, here’s the question: With an American ambassador and three other Americans murdered by Muslim mobs in Libya, and with tens of thousands of Muslims violently demonstrating around the world against a video on the Internet that virtually no one on Earth saw or even heard of, will anyone on the left write the truth about the greatest hate-filled rhetoric in the world — Islamic rhetoric?

Or, as I suggest, does the left engage in as much deception regarding the Islamic world as it does about conservatives?

The answer can be readily ascertained by taking the Krugman column and simply substituting some of his words with those placed in parentheses. Then the morally upside-down world of Krugman and the left becomes immediately apparent.

“When you heard the terrible news from (Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere in Muslim world), were you completely surprised? Or were you, at some level, expecting something like this atrocity to happen?

“There isn’t any place for eliminationist rhetoric (emanating from the Muslim world).”

“Where’s that toxic rhetoric coming from? Let’s not make a false pretense of balance: it’s coming, overwhelmingly, from the (the Muslim world).

“So will (the Libya massacre, and the massacres of Christians in Nigeria, Egypt, and Iraq) make our discourse less toxic? It’s really up to (Muslim) leaders. Will they accept the reality of what’s happening to (the Muslim world) and take a stand against eliminationist rhetoric? Or will they try to dismiss (all these massacres) as the mere act of a (tiny, unrepresentative, radical fringe group of Muslims) and go on as before?”

What I wrote in parentheses is what is true. What Krugman wrote is not true. Krugman deceives about the right, and he and the left deceive concerning the Islamic world.

There is a world replete with hate and with what Krugman calls “eliminationist” talk. It is not the world of American conservatives and Republicans. It is the Islamic world. Of course, not all Muslims, religious or otherwise, are haters. But in the world today, by far the most gratuitous and most lethal hate emanates from the Muslim world.

Why, then, do Paul Krugman and the left identify American conservatives and Republicans with hate and eliminationist rhetoric? And why does the left smear anyone who identifies the real producers of eliminationist rhetoric as bigoted and “Islamophobic”?

The explanation is this: Those who do not hate evil hate those who do hate evil.

“I Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear to preserve, protect and defend Islam from the Consitution of the United States”

“I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.”

Not Catholicism. Not Judaism. Only Islam.

Instead, they overlap, and share common principles — principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.

I also know civilization’s debt to Islam.

More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims…

Anti-colonialism, you say?

Michael Totten

The Obama administration’s Department of Justice official Edward Perez, who is the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, refuses to say that his department won’t attempt to criminalize blasphemy in the future.

***

Where is this headed? To this:

What an American President should be doing is to be telling the Islamic world that the US honors free speech and it is guaranteed by our Constitution and we have no intention of ending that freedom nor matter who is offended by it. We should NOT be kowtowing to Islam, which is what is happening right now. Islam needs to make accommodations to democracy, not the other way around.

I have little use for a religion which condones and encourages the murder of those who have nothing to do with the perceived offense, even you’re really gullible enough to believe this is all about a movie (It’s not).

Rising anger provoked by an anti-Islam film has seen protestors storm U.S. embassies in Muslim countries from Egypt to Yemen, where four people have been killed and dozens others injured.

Chanting ‘death to America’, hundreds of protestors marched on the U.S. Embassy compound in Yemen’s capital today, where they burned the American flag, used stones to smash windows, and set fire to cars, before breaking through the main gate of the heavily fortified compound in eastern Sana’a.

I have little use for a religion which is perpetually offended by pretty much anything and everything.

I have absolutely no use for a President who holds Islam in higher regard than the Constitution he swore to defend.
