Barry West was paralyzed from the chest down — which means he lost the use of his arms and legs — in a car crash in 1996. He was struggling to adapt to his new life in a wheelchair when he ran into a paralyzed pal who said something that got him thinking.
“He told me that he had just done a skydive. I was gobsmacked.”
Since that fateful encounter, West, 35, has taken up paragliding, scuba diving, skydiving, mountaineering, kayaking, and skiing (don’t miss the pics), and he plans to scale Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, next year. And, of course, he will be an Olympic torchbearer in July as the torch makes its way to London.
What’s next? West wants to ride a horse: “I don’t mean just sitting on it, but riding it properly around a paddock without anyone holding the reins.”

Esquire columnist Stephen Marche investigates how Facebook and social media have made us more densely networked — and more lonely — than ever.
Within this world of instant and absolute communication, unbounded by limits of time or space, we suffer from unprecedented alienation. We have never been more detached from one another, or lonelier. In a world consumed by ever more novel modes of socializing, we have less and less actual society. We live in an accelerating contradiction: the more connected we become, the lonelier we are. We were promised a global village; instead we inhabit the drab cul-de-sacs and endless freeways of a vast suburb of information.
Percentage wise, did you pay more than either? Less than either? Or about the same?
Obama does not qualify for the “Warren Buffett” rule and the president paid less taxes than his secretary. In fact, I really don’t hear Obama complain about the unfairness that he paid less in taxes.
(Whitehousedossier) President Obama paid a total federal tax rate in 2011 on adjusted income of $789,674 that may be lower than that of his secretary, even though she earned substantially less.
The most recent information about salary regarding Obama’s secretary is for his former secretary, Katie Johnson, who is listed by the White House as having made $90,000 in 2010.
On a $90,000 salary, she would pay $16,578 in federal taxes, $3,780 to Social Security, and $1,305 in Medicare taxes.
That adds up to a total federal tax burden of $21,663 on $90,000 in adjusted gross income, or a tax rate of 24 percent.
Obama’s federal income tax rate was 20.5 percent. If you include the Medicare and Social Security taxes paid by Obama, his total federal tax liability is 21.8 percent, fully two percent less than that of his secretary even though his adjusted gross income was nearly nine times hers.

Where is the outrage from those race baiters? You know, Obama, Holder, Sharpton, Jackson, other assorted liberals.

Both the pensioners were rushed to hospital where Mrs Strait, who was nearly blind, died from her injuries.

Protesters wear shirts quoting President Barack Obama during a Million Hoodies March, to protest the failure of police to arrest a Florida neighborhood watch volunteer for shooting to death an unarmed black teenager, Trayvon Martin, in Los Angeles, California, March 26, 2012. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, told police he fatally shot Martin after the teenager punched him, knocked him down and slammed his head into the ground, the Orlando Sentinel reported on Monday. The February 26 killing of the black teenager as he walked through a gated community by Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, has triggered protests around the country and calls for Zimmerman’s arrest. After helping stir up a national race war, the White House said today that Barack Obama is through talking about Trayvon Martin.
President Barack Obama will not be commenting further on the Trayvon Martin case, the White House said Wednesday as the Associated Press reported that charges were being filed against the teenager’s killer, George Zimmerman.
“I certainly don’t expect you’ll hear from him about an ongoing investigation both at the state and federal level. The comments he made are all that you will hear from him on that specific case,” Obama spokesman Jay Carney told reporters. “He and I and others will refrain from commenting on it.”
Obama memorably waded into the national debate over the tragedy in late March. “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” the president said.
Amid angry charges that race played a central role in the tragedy, Obama said “all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen—and that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident.”
Never mind all of the reprisal beatings or the threats by the New Black Panthers… Obama is through talking.
His work is done here.

(CNSNews.com) – Less than three months after President Barack Obama’s May 26, 2010 visit to the Solyndra plant in Fremont, Calif., a Solyndra investor alleged in an e-mail to the company’s new CEO that during Obama’s visit he had personally witnessed the president “actually promise” the company’s previous CEO that he would “look into” having the federal government buy Solyndra’s solar panels to place on federal buildings.
A month and a half after Obama’s visit to Solyndra, internal government emails show, an Energy Department official sought to arrange a meeting between the government’s procurement agency the Solyndra CEO to whom Obama had talked.
“When Obama visited Solyndra in June, 2010, Chris Gronet spoke very openly to Obama about the need for installation of Solynra’s rooftop solar on U.S. government buildings,” the investor, whose name was redacted, said in an Aug. 10, 2010 email to Solyndra CEO Brian Harrison and Steve Mitchell, managing director of Argonaut Private Equity, which was Solyndra’s largest private investor.
“I heard Obama actually promise Chris [Gronet] that he would look into it when he returned to Washington.” wrote the investor in the e-mail. “The point is that the government has to pay for energy no matter what. The capital funding to deploy a lot of rooftop solar on government buildings (say $300 million) just falls off the table in Washington anyway.”

Trayvon’ shouted as group attacks Good Samaritan — Gainesville Sun
The name of Trayvon Martin was invoked again Wednesday night in Gainesville during an attack by a group that police say stomped on a white man who was scuffling with a black robbery suspect on the Bo Diddley Community Plaza.
The robbery suspect, Carl Milton Babb, 50, had been released from prison earlier in the day after serving more than two years in prison for the same crime he is accused of committing Wednesday — snatching a purse from a woman near the downtown plaza.
According to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, Babb approached a woman eating dinner at the Lunchbox on the plaza at about 8:50 p.m. and asked her for a light.
When she said she didn’t have one, Babb took off with her purse, which contained her $500 cellphone, according to the report.
The woman’s dinner companion and another person took off after Babb.
When her friend caught up with Babb, according to the police report, Babb punched him in the face and grabbed his hair, but he was able to keep Babb pinned down, according to the report.
The scene attracted a crowd, and a number of people on the plaza approached Babb and the Good Samaritan, who tried to explain that Babb had just stolen his friend’s purse.
GPD spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said some members of the crowd shouted “Trayvon!” and that at least three of members of the crowd began stomping on the hands of the woman’s friend to force him to let go of Babb.
It was the second attack in the past week in Gainesville in which assailants yelled the first name of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black 17-year-old who was shot and killed by crime-watch volunteer George Zimmerman as the teen walked back to his father’s girlfriend’s apartment in Sanford on Feb. 26.
