(CNS News) — Americans overwhelmingly prefer the traditional “Merry Christmas” greeting over the “Happy Holidays” that some stores and businesses require their employees to utilize at this time of year.
A new Marist Poll of 1,026 adults nationwide finds that 64 percent — nearly two-thirds — think the appropriate greeting should be “Merry Christmas,” while 31 percent favored “Happy Holidays.”
The sentiment was strongest in the Midwest (70 percent) — but income level made no difference — with the same level of support (64 percent) for those who made under $50,000 as those who made over $50,000 a year.
People 45 or older were much more likely (72 percent) to support “Merry Christmas,” but the gap narrows to just two percentage points (49 percent to 47 percent) among those under age 45.
Seems Joe Biden is playing the class warfare card on Mitt Romney.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden is criticizing GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for favoring economic policies that Biden says would help some people succeed while leaving the majority of Americans behind.
Biden made the claims in an op-ed published in Friday’s editions of The Des Moines Register. Biden singled out Romney in the state where the first votes will be cast in the GOP competition in less than two weeks.
Biden said that Romney’s proposals for the economy “would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class.”
“Romney also misleadingly suggests that the president and I are creating an ‘Entitlement Society,’ whereby government provides everything for its people without regard to merit, as opposed to what he calls an “Opportunity Society,” where everything is merit-based and every man is left to fend for himself,” Biden wrote.
And yet the San Fran Chronicle still insists they’re “mostly peaceful.”
Berkeley (SF Gate) — Berkeley police cleared the Bay Area’s last major Occupy encampment peacefully this afternoon, following an overnight skirmish with protesters that resulted in two arrests.
The clearance followed an uptick in violence at the camp that included two sexual assaults and numerous drug and alcohol related incidents, police said.
On Wednesday, city officials warned the protesters, who had been camped at Civic Center Park since early October, that police would start enforcing the city’s ban on overnight lodging within 24 hours. Most of the 150 or so protesters left voluntarily, but a few dozen remained early Thursday morning when police and public works crews arrived to begin clearing the park.
Around 12:30 a.m., two people were arrested when they approached the nearby police station with gas masks, crowbars and cannisters, Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said. One was arrested for public drunkenness and posession of drugs, and the other for resisting arrest, she said.
About two hours later, protesters surrounded public works crews attempting to remove tents and other items from the park. Police formed a line to protect the workers, and at least one officer used a baton when shoved by a protester, Kusmiss said.
As 2011 draws to a close, it’s worth looking back at some of the year’s most foolish comments from inside the Obama administration. If Academy Awards were handed out for political folly, the Obama team would be sweeping the board come Oscar time. It hasn’t been an easy task narrowing the list down to a mere ten – it could easily have been a top 20 or 30. The list has a strong foreign policy bias (not least as this is a British-based blog): I’ve omitted many candidates on the domestic front that would certainly qualify for inclusion. But here goes:
First lady Michelle Obama tells Barbara Walters in a 20/20 special that it is “practical” for her to put her self highest on her priority list.
Obama says she found her self slipping “pretty low” on her own priority list because she was “so busy caring for everyone else.”
Michelle Obama says she spends time with girlfriends and going out in her attempt to put herself higher on her priority list. Transcript below.
Barbara Walters, ABC News: “Mrs. Obama, you’ve recently said something that I thought was very interesting for other women to hear. You said ‘you put your own self highest on your priority list.’ That sounds selfish?”
Michelle Obama: “No, no, it’s practical. It’s something that I found I needed to do for quite some time, even before the presidency. And I found it other women, in similar situated balancing career family, trying to do it all and a lot of times we just slip pretty low on our own priority list because we’re so busy caring for everyone else. And one of the things that I want to model for my girls is investing in themselves as much as they invest in others.”
WTF? And nothing is done?
Via Washington Times:
People monitoring the Occupy D.C. movement tell Inside the Ring that the two encampments are fast becoming health hazards. Numerous protesters also recently were sickened with unusual respiratory illnesses.
The major emerging problem for the leftists camped out in tents at McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza is rats. The rodents appear to be moving into the area by the hundreds, and their numbers are increasing daily.
The McPherson camp appears be where more radical leftists are based. An observer familiar with the McPherson camp said one distinctive smell coming from the park area is that of methamphetamine being smoked.
Among the flags being flown by some protesters are those from the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and al Qaeda.

Obama Campaign Rips Romney For Refusing To Release Records…
Obama’s transcripts unavailable for comment.
(NYT) — Mitt Romney, who is one of the wealthiest men ever to seek the presidency, said on Wednesday that he had no intention of releasing his tax returns if he became the Republican presidential nominee, breaking with a long tradition in both parties. [...]
A spokesman for President Obama‘s re-election campaign blasted Mr. Romney and questioned whether he had something to hide in his finances.
“Why does Governor Romney feel like he can play by a different set of rules?” said Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for the Obama campaign. “What is it that he doesn’t want the American people to see? Governor Romney, who has favored secrecy over openness time after time, should live up to the same standard of disclosure his father and others set.”
The Democratic National Committee took only hours on Thursday to unveil a new Web site, www.whatmittpays.com. The site allows visitors to select their income level and compare how much less they would have paid if they were taxed at what the group assumes would be Mr. Romney’s lower rate.
