Toledo: 78-Year-Old Man Pummeled By Six Youths Screaming “This Is For Trayvon” — “Kill That White Man”…

(Toledo Blade) — It was six against one.

Six juveniles — the youngest 11, and the oldest 17 — nearly boxed in Dallas Watts, a 78-year-old man from East Toledo.

Mr. Watts was on his way home from the nearby Gas Express Mart at Starr Avenue and White Street about 4:45 p.m. Saturday when the boys approached him.

One pointed at Mr. Watts and said, “take him down,” the victim recounted in an interview Monday.

Mr. Watts, carrying home two small bags of pork rinds to dole out as treats to his three dachshunds, looked at the youth and said, “Why you picking on me?” Mr. Watts recalled. “Remember Trayvon. Why you picking on me?”

The boy, again, allegedly told his friends to “take him down.”

Toledo police charged two children — the 11-year-old and a 17-year-old — with robbery, Sgt. Roy Kennedy said.

The boys on Monday were ordered held in detention at the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center, prosecutor Lori Olender said.

At one point, the victim recalled being lifted from the ground so one of the boys could “drop-kick” him in the chest.

One boy, he said, put his foot on the back of the victim’s neck, with another shouting, “Kill him.”

While Mr. Watts was down the boys kicked him, over and over, shouting, “[Get] that white [man]. This is for Trayvon. . . Trayvon lives, white [man]. Kill that white [man],” according to a police report.

“The only reason I mentioned Trayvon, that was my defense,” Mr. Watts said. “Don’t pick on me. I am not your enemy.”

(of course, our president will not say that if he had a white grandfather, it would be this man. or sharpton and jackson out organizing lynch mobs to get these 6 black kids killed.)

Why is Obama so rattled? Another speaking gaffe sets off a federal appeals court judge…

Little did Dana Lydia Kaersvang know when she arose Tuesday to go to work as a Justice Department lawyer that by day’s end she would become the center of a major constitutional imbroglio between a panel of U.S. Appeals Court judges and the president of the United States.

Here’s how it started. On Monday President Obama, during a news conference with Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon, was asked about last week’s Obamacare arguments before the Supreme Court that did not appear to go well for Obama’s side.

In response, Obama launched into a long explication about the benefits of his healthcare plan, the ones in effect and the many others still to come involving millions of seniors and children, among others. He added, “So there’s not only an economic element to this, and a legal element to this, but there’s a human element to this. And I hope that’s not forgotten in this political debate.”

The president continued:

“Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.

“And I’d just remind conservative commentators that for years what we’ve heard is, the biggest problem on the bench was judicial activism or a lack of judicial restraint — that an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law.  Well, this is a good example. And I’m pretty confident that this Court will recognize that and not take that step.”

(Politico) — Several Congressional Black Caucus members have introduced a resolution that memorializes 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and calls for the repeal of controversial gun laws that allow shooters to claim self-defense.

The resolution states that the February shooting of Martin “sets a horrific precedent of vigilante justice and compromises the integrity of the legal system.” It also says assailant George Zimmerman’s “unfounded assumptions and racial bias led to the use of deadly force.”

Zimmerman’s family and lawyer have refuted claims that he shot Martin because he was black.

“As the Department of Justice continues its thorough investigation into Trayvon Martin’s untimely death, it is time for us as legislators to look at the troubling ‘Stand Your Ground’ law, which has enabled George Zimmerman to remain free,” CBC Chairman Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) said in a statement.

The four-page resolution, sponsored by Cleaver, has three other co-sponsors: Democratic Reps. Corrine Brown, Alcee Hastings and Frederica Wilson – all of Florida, where the shooting occurred.

Commenting on the public’s current low opinion of Congress, Pelosi said “Congress has always been a mockery since the beginning of our country”:

“Congress has always — let’s put this in perspective — Congress has always been a mockery since the beginning of our country and if you looked at the history of it, they’ve always been fighting over one thing or another. When Speaker Polk, one of the only speakers, I think, to become President of the United States. . .”

“He — he — he said “This place is so out of order then I`m not going to recognize anybody.”

Pelosi then said that shunning “civility” in Congressional debate is “a tactic by obstructionists”:

“But, the fact is, is that if you can get civility back — and that’s why the public has to be part of the solution. They have to demand and insist on the stability because it’s a tactic by obstructionists. If you want to obstruct, you make it so unpleasant that no one wants to pay attention.”

QUESTION: The president’s remarks about the healthcare case in the Supreme Court has been interpreted as challenging or putting pressure on the Court ahead of their decision. Can you speak to that and why not just allow the Court to reach a decision?

JAY CARNEY: First of all, the president was asked a question and then responded to it. Secondly, as I just said, he made an observation about why he believes that — well, first of all, he believes the Affordable Care Act is constitutional. Why he believes it is constitutional and why he believes that the Supreme Court will, in keeping with 80+ years of judicial precedent and Supreme Court precedent, will defer to Congress on its authority to pass regulation on issues of national economic importance like our healthcare system.

It’s the reverse of intimidation. He’s simply making an observation about precedent and the fact that he expects the Court to adhere to that precedent. It’s obviously, as he made clear yesterday, up to the Court to make its determination and we will wait and see what the Court does.

Obama overheard grumbling about those “damn facts” always screwing him over.

Pressed about President Obama’s claim that “a strong majority” passed Obamacare, his spokesman retreated.

“A majority passed [the health care law], Ed,” said visibly-frustrated White House Press Secretary Jay Carney. Fox News’ Ed Henry was grilling Carney after the press secretary said “no,” the Ryan budget — which passed the House with nine more votes than Obamacare received — did not have “a strong majority” of support.

The Ryan budget passed this year by a 228-191 margin. Obamacare passed the House by a  219-212 margin.

CAIRO (AP) — The United States and other Western governments must accept the new reality that Islamists have emerged to fill the power vacuum in the Arab world after a wave of popular uprisings, Human Rights Watch said in its annual report Sunday.

The New York-based group also urged Islamist parties, which have emerged as the biggest winners in recent elections in Tunisia and Egypt and are expected to fare well in Libya, to respect the rights of women and religious minorities, saying they cannot “pick and choose” when it comes to human rights.

Islamist parties are “genuinely popular” in the Arab world, said HRW’s executive director, Kenneth Roth, warning that “ignoring that popularity would violate democratic principles.”

“Being a political Islamic government should not be a reason to turn a government into a pariah,” Roth told reporters in Cairo, where the group released its annual report.

The Arab Spring revolts began in Tunisia in late 2010 and quickly spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain, deposing or challenging authoritarian rulers as citizens who long seemed incapable or unwilling to rise against decades of repression took to the streets in a stunning awakening.

Since the collapse of the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia a year ago, Islamist groups once largely confined to the political sidelines, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, have formed parties and contested parliamentary polls, winning the greatest share of seats.

That pivotal Supreme Court decision, announced 39 years ago this week, secured the right of reproductive self-determination for American women. It also helped to rectify an inequity more related to poverty than gender.

Before Roe, it wasn’t easy for wealthy Oregonians to get an abortion, but they got one if they were desperate. They just had to find $1,300 to fly to Japan. Poor women, meanwhile, resorted to quacks, coat hangers and herbal potions.

Today in Oregon, desperate women can terminate a pregnancy safely and legally, and the availability of abortion bolsters not only their own family’s security but also the health of our society. Around the country, however, abortion rights are under seige. This year, two initiatives aimed at curtailing Roe are probably headed to the Oregon ballot, too. And advocates are gearing up for a fight.

The president prided himself on honesty in his first budget proposal, including the real estimated costs of spending, but Obama later shifted his stance and approved the use of budget gimmickry, according to The New Yorker.

When his aides suggested in late 2009 that he should abandon the honest approach on estimated spending on disaster aid, for example, the president signed off, The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza reports. Obama also approved of fanciful budget numbers on his signature health care legislation, Lizza wrote:

In the December 20th memo, [Obama aides] resorted to gimmickry…On disaster relief, for example, he had estimated that the government would need twenty billion dollars a year, a figure based on the statistical likelihood of major disasters requiring federal aid.

Now Obama’s aides reminded him that Congress had ignored his “ ‘honest budgeting’ approach,” and perhaps they should, too. They proposed “$5 billion per year for disaster costs.” Obama drew [a] check mark.

The White House could also save billions by fiddling with the way it presented savings from Obama’s health-care-reform bill. Check.
