Senate Democrats should Go for the Kerry Rule
(WSJ) — As they say in politics, branding is everything.
Senate Democratic leaders suggested Wednesday that the so-called Buffett Rule should be renamed the Romney Rule, after GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romneysaid this week that he paid less than 15% of his roughly $20 million in income in federal income taxes in 2010.
The proposal — dubbed the Buffett Rule by President Barack Obama — a nod to billionaire Warren Buffett who famously said his tax rate was a lot lower than his secretary’s, and that shouldn’t be — would require households earning more than $1 million to pay an effective federal tax rate of at least 30%.
(like the subject line says, they really should be honest and rename it the Kerry Rule because John Kerry is (thanks to his wife) is so much richer than Mitt Romney! And John Kerry (and his rich wife) only pays at a 13% rate!)

President Obama today asserted that President Bush was responsible for bailing out auto companies in Detroit. Obama, on the other hand, implemented dramatic changes that saved the industry.
“Keep in mind,” Obama said, “That the administration before us, they had been writing some checks to the auto industry asking nothing in return. It was just a bailout, straight — straightforward.”
Obama explained that he “demanded responsibility” from the auto industry, forcing it to “retool and to restructure,” making it “more efficient.”
“Over the past two years, that entire industry has added nearly 160,000 jobs,” Obama continued. “GM is number one in the world again. Ford is investing billions in new American plants. Chrysler is growing faster. So today, the American auto industry is back.”
Bush did authorize the first auto loan of a $17.4 billion, in October 2008, declaring some aspects of the loan depended on the companies hitting “Restructuring Targets.”
Obama, however, gave the auto industry an $85 billion bailout. His retooling of the industry forced aside creditors in favor of the UAW union workers.
According to the Detroit News, the Treasury Department announced in November that it expects to lose $23.6 billion in the auto bailout, as a result of the sharp decline in GM stock.

President Obama’s State of the Union Address was the lowest rated of his presidency, down 12 percent from last year’s speech.
Obama drew 37.75 million viewers last night on 14 networks and cable news channels, according to the website TVbythenumbers, which tracks television ratings.
During his first speech to a joint session of Congress in February 2009, Obama drew 52.4 million viewers. His first official State of the Union Address on January 2010 attracted 48 million and last year’s SOTU had 42.8 million.

(Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama plans to accelerate the pace of American aid to Egypt, a top State Department official said on Wednesday, as the most populous Arab nation reaches a critical stage in its uncertain transition away from autocratic rule.
Undersecretary of State Robert Hormats, part of a U.S. delegation that held unprecedented talks last week with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, said Washington wanted to provide “more immediate benefits” to Egyptians, who earlier this month conducted their first democratic elections in decades.
“During this period, we want to be as supportive as we can. This is an historic moment. Egypt’s a country of enormous importance,” Hormats said.
Under the plan, some non-urgent U.S. aid slated for other countries – he did not name them – would be redirected to Egypt. And funding in the pipeline for long-term programs in Egypt would be shifted to quick-impact projects, he said.

Florida Republican Rep. Allen West told The Daily Caller that Democratic Rep. James Clyburn and Rev. Al Sharpton claiming Newt Gingrich used race to win in the South Carolina GOP presidential primary is “absolutely reprehensible.”
“Under President Obama’s leadership, there’s been a 41 percent increase in food stamp recipients in the United States of America,” West told TheDC after hosting a Conservative Black Forum on Capitol Hill Monday.
“If there are people such as Rep. Clyburn that don’t want to face up to the truth then that’s on them and I think it’s absolutely reprehensible that they feel that the only thing they can fall back on is try to create some type of racial division which we know that the Democrats are already trying to create some type of class warfare division as well,” he said.”

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) asked National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis on Tuesday why the Park Service’s own statute forbidding camping had not been enforced as it applied to Occupy D.C. protesters at MacPherson Square.
“There’s a statute I believe that says camping is illegal. Camping in MacPherson Park is against the law. Is that correct?” Walsh asked Jarvis during a subcommittee hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that focused on why the Park Service had not removed the Occupy protesters.
“That is correct,” Jarvis said. [...]
Walsh asked why those individuals had not been removed and why Jarvis’ own statute had not been enforced.
“Because … each of our First Amendment demonstrations are a little bit unique, and this one is, let’s say unprecedented, in part, in that it has been stated that the core of their First Amendment activity is that they occupy the site,” Jarvis answered.
“And so as we have approached this, how we are trying to manage this activity and provide our first goal in the National Park Service in allowing and providing for First Amendment activities is the health and safety of the community and the demonstrators themselves, and we felt that going in right away and enforcing the regulations … against camping, could potentially incite a reaction on their part that would result in possible injury or property damage,” Jarvis added.
