The Enemy Within

Since the end of the Cold War, America has been on a relentless search for enemies. But the real dangers are at home.

The United States is a bit like a 375-pound, middle-aged man with a heart condition walking down a city street at night eating a Big Mac. He’s sweating profusely because he’s afraid he might get mugged. But the thing that’s going to kill him is the burger.

Since the end of the Cold War, America has been on a relentless search for enemies. I don’t mean a search in the sense of ferreting them out and defeating them. I mean that America seems to have a visceral need for them.

Many in the United States have a rampant, untreated case of enemy dependency. Politicians love enemies because bashing them helps stir up public sentiment and distract attention from problems at home. The defense industry loves enemies because enemies help them make money. Pundits and their publications love enemies because enemies sell papers and lead eyeballs to cable-news food fights.

The Greeks, who once seemed to know a lot more about life than they do about fiscal management today, noted that for any drama to succeed it requires agon — conflict. The same seems to hold true for politics and foreign policy. It’s easier to run against a threat than it is to articulate a vision of where we should be headed and how to get there. Absent clear dangers, it’s hard to persuade people to fund giant defense and intelligence establishments or to mobilize international coalitions. (Just add up how many international coalitions are primarily against things — enemies, hunger, disease, climate change — rather than for things.)

For the World War II generation, there were the Germans and the Japanese, vilified so much that even today they are the enemies against whom all others are measured. Then there were the Soviets, who were both dependably evil and happened to be a genuine threat. After the communist collapse, America tried to replace them but came up at first only with tin-pot bad guys like Manuel Noriega, Slobodan Milosevic, and “Baby Doc” Duvalier.

Then came the 9/11 attacks, and politicians simply crossed out the word “Soviet” in their stump speeches, replaced it with “terrorist” (despite the huge disparity in the nature and scope of the threats), and started scaremongering and spending like the good old days.

SAN FRANCISCO (WWJ) - BMW North America has probably had to deal with plenty of unusual lawsuits, but one filed last week may be a first — a California man says the seat on his motorcycle has given him an erection he just can’t shake.
Henry Wolf of California is suing BMW America and aftermarket seatmaker Corbin-Pacific claiming his issue began after a four-hour ride on his 1993 BMW motorcycle, with a ridge like seat. Wolf is seeking compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, emotional distress and what he calls “general damage.”
He said he’s had the erection non-stop for 20 months. And it comes with another side effect: The lawsuit says Wolf is “now is unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental anguish.”

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula confirmed that a senior leader was killed in a recent US drone airstrike in Yemen. The commander had trained in Afghanistan and served as a member of Osama bin Laden’s bodyguard.

AQAP confirmed that the commander, Mohammed Saeed al Umda (also known as Ghareeb al Taizi), was killed in the April 22 drone strike on a convoy in the Al Samadah area, near the border of Marib and Al Jawf provinces. The terror group announced his death in a martyrdom statement that was released yesterday on jihadist websites. The statement was translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.

“‘Ghareeb al Taizi,’ may Allah have mercy on him, … was martyred … with two mujahideen as a result of an American bombing in Samdah district of Marib,” the statement said, according to SITE.

AQAP said that Umda served in Afghanistan, where “he was close to Sheikh Osama bin Laden, may Allah have mercy on him, and was in his special guard.” Bin Laden’s special bodyguard was also know as the Black Guard.

Get me outta here! I’m being forced in a most humiliating manner to reveal to all the world my profound ignorance of basic constitutional issues.

Something like that thought must have been rolling around inside the mind of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius while she completely choked under questioning about these legal issues by South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy. Even if you disagree profoundly with Sebelius you almost have to feel embarrassed by her pathetic performance last week at the House Education and Workforce Committee hearing. Fortunately for Sebelius her confessions of ignorance were completely ignored by the Mainstream Media but the video lives on for all eternity to serve as a testament to liberal ignorance and arrogance.

Thus far the only two news sites to cover this train wreck of a testimony by Sebelius are the New York Sun and the Catholic News Agency.  Here is the Sun’s description of the video:

What a remarkable glimpse of the gulf between the administration and Congress over religious freedom is flashing around the internet. It is a Youtube video of the secretary of health and human services, Kathleen Sebelius, at a hearing of the House Education and Workforce Committee hearing. She is being grilled by a Republican congressman of South Carolina, Trey Gowdy. He asks her about her a statement she has made about seeking a balance between believer’s rights and the contraception mandate. What becomes clear is that there is no feel for, no thought about, but glancing attention to the Constitution the secretary is sworn to support.

Yes, the video is “flashing around the internet” but the MSM has yet to report on it. The Catholic New Agency provides additional details on what took place:

The New Left Tactic – Silence Conservative Twitterers

By Dana Loesch

Earlier this evening my husband, Chris Loesch, had his Twitter account suspended. There have been stories going around of conservatives getting suspended from Twitter over innocuous things while accounts like @KillZimmerman (an account which threatened to kill George Zimmerman) and other such accounts were left active for weeks. After a user remarked about me being raped and murdered, Chris and others defended me.

At least 30 beagle puppies were rescued this weekend by animal rights activists from a notoriously inhumane breeding facility in Italy. Green Hill 2001 farms the animals out to vivisection labs, where the dogs are subjected to live experimental research and then death. Members of the Animal Liberation Front of Italy climbed over barbed wire fences on the grounds of Green Hill, then managed to squirrel the animals out through a breach in the fencing.

According to one ALF protester, “all the animals had a strong smell of urine, and one puppy about 8 months old, has an incision that runs the full length of his abdomen.” (See more photos here; heads up — some are graphic.)

Twelve activists were arrested in the liberation.

(asswipes who use dogs should be used the same way! enough said by me)

Chief: Drones ‘certainly’ coming to skies over Beltway
WASHINGTON – Look up. Drones are “certainly” coming to the skies over the Beltway in the next few years, one area police chief says.
The use of drones in the D.C. area became public information last week, after the Federal Aviation Administration released a list of agencies currently or previously permitted to use the unmanned aerial vehicles. It included many federal departments, such as Agriculture, Homeland Security and Energy as well as local organizations such as Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Tech.
Soon, the Fairfax County Police Department may be added to that list.
“Drones will certainly have a purpose and a reason to be in this region in the next, coming years,” said Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer, while speaking on WTOP’s “Ask the Chief” program on Monday. “Just as a standpoint as an alternative for spotting traffic and sending information back to our VDOT Smart Traffic centers, and being able to observe backups.”
The use of drones over U.S. soil has some in Congress concerned about Americans’ privacy rights.
“The potential for invasive surveillance of daily activities with drone technology is high,” wrote Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., in an April 19 letter to FAA. “We must ensure that as drones take flight in domestic airspace, they don’t take off without privacy protections for those along their flight path.”
Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, said in the same letter he “proudly suppported” the FAA Modernization and Reform Act that allowed for the domestic use of drones. There are many institutions in his home state that the FAA has cleared for done use, including Texas A&M University, the police forces in the city of Arlington outside Dallas-Fort Worth and Montgomery County near Houston.
“However, if used improperly or unethically, drones could endanger privacy and I want to make sure that risk is taken into consideration,” he said.

I did not know this is a problem.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — U.S. regulators have approved use of a powerful Johnson & Johnson antibiotic to treat plague, an extremely rare, sometimes-deadly bacterial infection.

The Food and Drug Administration also approved Levaquin, known generically as levofloxacin, to reduce risk of people getting plague after exposure to the bacteria that cause it. Called Yersinia pestis, the bacteria are considered a potential bioterrorism agent.

Another Day, Another Obama Spike Of The Bin Laden Football

Whoa here! Even the left is turning on Obama over this subject!

(CBS News) — Arianna Huffington, founder and editor-in-chief of the The Huffington Post, called the Obama campaign’s decision to tout the assassination of Osama bin Laden in a campaign advertisement “despicable.” The ad questions whether presidential candidate Mitt Romney would have ordered the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

“I don’t think there should be an ad about that,” Huffington said Monday on “CBS This Morning.” “I think it’s one thing to celebrate the fact that they did such a great job (with television specials). All that is perfectly legitimate. But to turn it into a campaign ad is one of the most despicable things you can do.”

She added, “It’s the same thing Hillary Clinton did with the 3 a.m. call. ‘You’re not ready to be commander-in-chief.’ It’s also what makes politicians and political leaders act irrationally when it comes to matters of war because they’re so afraid to be called wimps, that they make decisions, which are incredible destructive for the country. I’m sure the president would not have escalated in Afghanistan if he was not as concerned, as Democrats are, that Republicans are going to use not escalating against him in a campaign.”

One would think that someone is hiding something!

(CBS News) — For more than a year, CBS News has been investigating the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms’ “Fast and Furious” operation and related cases that also employed the controversial tactic of “gunwalking.”

With Justice Department officials refusing all interview requests to date, CBS News requested numerous public documents through the Freedom of Information Act.

So far, all of the requests that have been answered have been denied in part or in full.

This week, we received a partial response to a request made more than a year ago. It asked for communications involving “Project Gunrunner,” the umbrella program for Fast and Furious, from 2010 through April 2011.

Specifically, it sought any communications to which any of the following top Justice officials were a party:

Attorney General Eric Holder; Lanny Breuer, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division; Kevin Carwile, chief of the Capital Case Unit; and Deputy Assistant Attorney Generals Bruce Schwarz and Kenneth Blanco.

The response includes mostly-blank pages.
