The Feel Good Story of the Day

Want Your Very Own Secret Submarine Base?

The Royal Norwegian Navy has put up a secret, mountainside submarine base for sale… and judging by what it looks like, it would work both as a superhero hideout and as a supervillain lair. Officially called the Olavsvern Naval Base, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) spent $494 million building it back in 1967. But don’t let that amount deter you from dreaming about owning this clandestine base, superheroes- and supervillains-wannabe: the Navy is selling it for the low, low price of $17.3 million.

The full above-ground space measures 13,500 square meters, including the opening at the side of the mountain. It’s the 25,000-square meter space within the mountain that makes it oh-so-interesting, though. While you’ll find mundane rooms like ordinary offices inside the property, it also has a dry dock for submarines and boats as well as a tunnel system, because no hideout or lair is ever complete without them.

GOP plans to call attention to healthcare law with tax repeal votes next week

With a Supreme Court decision on healthcare fast approaching, House Republicans are doubling down on efforts to bring attention to President Obama’s signature legislative issue.

The effort, which includes votes on several measures to repeal taxes under the law, is intended to highlight unpopular aspects of the landmark bill as the presidential campaign between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney heats up.

The House next week will consider measures to repeal taxes imposed on medical devices and over-the-counter medication.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced the votes late last month, and called the tax on medical devices in particularly “draconian” in a memo sent to GOP lawmakers.

On Tuesday President Obama posthumously awarded World War II resistance fighter Jan Karski the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But during his remarks about Karski, he referred to ”a Polish death camp.” There were only Nazi death camps in occupied Poland.

The White House announced today that the president sent a letter of “regret” to the Polish president–not an apology. Remember, Obama is a serial apologist for America–but apparently he draws the line with his own mistakes.

Also today Obama held six fundraisers, three of them in his hometown of Chicago. About a dozen Polish-Americans protested Obama outside the Chicago Cultural Center in the Loop, the site of one of those fundraisers.

If you are a communist, you know this!

Media Tracker:

Workers’ Voices, a front group for the AFL-CIO, has been billed as the “largest union super-PAC,” even though its own website declares it is not an exclusively union-oriented organization. “Workers’ Voice represents and fights for all working families, union and non-union,” the site proclaims. [...]

Their name, however, may not be the best-conceived political label for a group seeking to sway voter opinion in an election. As it turns out, Workers’ Voices is a fairly routine and common name for propaganda newspapers and broadsides affiliated with the Communist Party. In Detroit, a group calling itself the Communist Voice Organization has for a long time published the Detroit Workers’ VoiceWorker’s Voice was also the name of an Irish newspaper with ties to the Communist Party there. Other Communist Party groups in other nations have also used the name frequently.

Not to be outdone by obama, here comes Boehner (who has to go at all costs!)….

Debt Up $1.59T Under GOP House—More in 15 Months Than First 97 Congresses Combined

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives, which took office in January 2011, has enacted federal spending bills under which the national debt has increased more in less than one term of Congress than in the first 97 Congresses combined.

In the fifteen months that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives–led by Speaker John Boehner–has effectively enjoyed a constitutional veto over federal spending, the federal government’s debt has increased by about $1.59 trillion.

Article 1, Section 9, Clause 7 of the Constitution says: “No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law.” A law appropriating money cannot be enacted unless it is approved by the House.

The approximately $1.59 trillion in new debt accumulated since the Republican-controlled House gained a veto over federal spending legislation is more than the total increase in the federal debt between 1789, when the first Congress convened, and October 1984, when the 98th Congress was nearing the end of its second session.

War on Women? Well, the princess, nancy pelosi, is on the front lines for sure! She pays her female staffers a lot less than her male staffers! Probably like all the democrat senators and representatives do.

Andrew Stiles:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) refused to answer questions about Senate Democrats paying their female staff members less than male staffers on Thursday. She may have ducked the question because a Washington Free Beacon analysis shows she pays the women on her staff $26,606 less per year on average.

According to publicly available salary data at the website Legistorm, Pelosi’s female employees earned an average annual salary of $96,394 in fiscal year 2011. Male employees earned $123,000 on average, a difference of 27.6 percent.

The gap is even larger if calculated using the median salaries for men and women. For Pelosi’s female employees, the median annual salary was $93,320 in 2011, compared to $130,455 for male employees — a difference of $37,135, or 40 percent.

Pelosi’s entire staff — men and women — earned an average annual salary of $108,150 and a median salary of $114,662. By both measures, women made considerably less.
