Today in 1789 – Whiskey distilled from maize (corn) is first produced by American clergyman the Reverend Elijah Craig. It is named Bourbon because Reverend Craig lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Today in 1940 – The Soviet Union presents an ultimatum to Lithuania resulting in Lithuanian loss of independence. This sets up 1941 – June deportation: the first major wave of Soviet mass deportations and murder of Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, begins. When the Germans show up a year later, they’re greeted as liberators. Sort of says something about the tender care of Stalin.
Today in 2017 – In Alexandria, Virginia, Republican member of Congress and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana is shot while practicing for charity baseball. His crime is being republican.
