A recent Pokémon Unite leak suggests that at least one super-sized Gigantamax Pokémon from Pokémon Sword and Shield could be coming in the future. Call of Duty: Mobile developer TiMi Studio Group first released Pokémon Unite as a free-to-play multiplayer battle arena game for the Nintendo Switch in July 2021, with a wider launch on Android-compatible devices the following September. Players control a single Pokémon and work to level it up by defeating computer-controlled wild Pokémon and other players in frantic multiplayer battles.
While certain aspects of Pokémon Unite have been met with scrutiny by players, such as the game’s microtransaction model and the recently launched Pokémon Unite subscription service, Unite has been downloaded over 70 million times across all platforms and has fostered a growing e-Sports community in the year since its release. In that time, developer TiMi Studio Group has added plenty of new features and playable characters to Pokémon Unite, such as the ranged Psychic Gardevior and the classic Water-type powerhouse Blastoise. There have also been several patches to address certain overpowered creatures like Snorlax and Greninja, as well as DLC alternate costumes for Pokémon Unite combatants like Gengar and Lucario.
Earlier this week, Twitter user and Pokémon dataminer Eclipse ( via Comicbook.com) began sharing a series of unreleased and currently unannounced assets from a future Pokémon Unite update. The leaks include news that Tyranitar, Buzzwole, and Glaceon would be added to Pokémon Unite’s roster over the next couple of months, as well as a range of new Pikachu Holowear outfits. The leak also includes information suggesting Pikachu could be the first Pokémon in the game to receive Sword and Shield’s Gigantamax ability. Eclipse admits they aren’t sure what this last image is supposed to signify, but the popular theory is that Gigantamax Pikachu will be made playable in the future – either as a separate character or some kind of special mode for the Pikachu, who is already in Pokémon Unite.
Gigantamax Pokémon were first introduced in 2019’s Pokémon Sword and Shield as a new type of battle mechanic similar to Pokémon X and Y’s Mega Evolutions and Sun and Moon’s Z-Moves. By holding a battle in a special location called a Power Spot, trainers can have their Pokémon grow to gigantic sizes and inflict devastating amounts of damage to their opponents. Gigantamax Pokémon stand out from Sword and Shield’s Dynamax forms, as only a select few Pokémon species have the ability.
Pikachu is one of 33 Pokémon with Gigantamax forms in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and if this recent leak is accurate, players could be able to unleash this giant-sized version of the Pokémon franchise’s famous mascot in Pokémon Unite as well. It still isn’t clear when or in what form Gigantamax Pikachu will appear in Pokémon Unite, so fans will have to stay tuned for an official announcement from TiMi Studio Group or The Pokémon Company about any upcoming content.
