Welcome to Plathville: How Kim’s ‘Midlife Crisis’ Is Changing Series

Kim Plath has completely changed her behavior on Welcome to Plathville season 4, leaving her husband to call it a mid-life crisis, something that has impacted the entire series. After deciding to separate from Barry Plath, open a dance studio, and focus on herself, Kim has changed the dynamic of the series. It has affected how Kim’s children act around her, the way Barry talks about her, and has shown a more vulnerable side to herself.

Kim and Barry seemed inseparable on Welcome to Plathville seasons 1 through 3, despite claims that Kim steamrolled Barry in a lot of situations. They agreed to raise all nine of their children in an unconventional way and stuck by each other during some of the hardest moments in their life. Whether they were disciplining Lydia Plath for texting a boy without their permission or showing support for Moriah Plath’s blossoming music career, Kim and Barry were in it together. Kim shocked Welcome to Plathville fans on season 4 when she decided she was no longer in love with Barry.

Kim opened the season by going back on some of the principles she had for the past 20 years by listening to secular music in the home and wearing makeup. Welcome to Plathville’s Kim and Barry have loosened up on the strict rules they had for the older kids growing up, as they now allow their younger kids to use technology and have social media accounts. Kim took it a step further by deciding to spend more time away from her home, where she is supposed to be homeschooling the younger kids, to open her own dance studio.

On Welcome to Plathville, there has been a divide between the family for some time, and Kim abruptly deciding to move out has not helped the situation. Due to her changing behavior, the kids are spending less time with their mom, and Lydia has been burdened with trying to fill the gap. Barry has shown real emotion for the first time in four seasons of the show, and Amber Plath has got her first chance to speak up on Welcome to Plathville. Amber surprised fans when she stood up against her mom, asking why her dad had to move out of the family home when Kim was the one who wanted to separate.

Between Kim and Barry’s crumbling marriage, Ethan and Olivia Plath’s trust issues, and Moriah’s breakup from Max Kallschmidt, this season of Welcome to Plathville has had more tears than ever before. All of the kids have spoken about how shocked they were to hear Kim say she was unhappy in the marriage and wanted to leave Barry since she always preached that once you were married, it’s for life. It has also led to more secrets between the Plath family, as Ethan still does not even know about his parents’ separation since they are not on speaking terms.
